Internships
The North American Congress on Latin America, an independent non-profit established in 1966, is seeking candidates for three internship positions for the summer of 2008. Interns will assist staff in the production of our award-winning magazine, NACLA Report on the Americas, as well as with programs, events, and development. While interns are unpaid, course credit can be arranged. All positions will start as soon as possible, and can be arranged for one or two semesters.
1. Graduate-level Editorial Intern
Description: Assist editorial staff in producing the NACLA Report on the Americas, the most widely read English-language magazine on Latin America. Tasks include generating story ideas, general research, photo research, proofreading, and fact-checking, as well as administrative work, like handling author communication and maintaining a database of authors.
Time commitment is at least one full day per week.
Qualifications: Background in Latin America and the Caribbean or training in Latin American and Caribbean studies at the graduate level. Ability to write well and pay attention to detail are essential. Basic computer skills required. Knowledge of Spanish or Portuguese helpful. Familiarity with the NACLA Report on the Americas a definite plus.
2. Undergraduate Circulation/Publishing Intern
Description: Assist publishing staff with publication and circulation of NACLA Report on the Americas. Tasks include circulation support, including handling orders; distributor and circulation outreach, including identifying new markets and creating marketing materials; and advertising support, including identifying new advertisers and generating new advertising strategies.
Time commitment is preferably 2 afternoons per week.
Qualifications: An interest in the business of magazine publication and is required. Prior experience in marketing/outreach is a plus, as are design skills in Adobe InDesign or Quark Xpress. Knowledge of Spanish or Portuguese is helpful.
3. Undergraduate Development/Programs Intern
Description: Assist the Director with development and program activities. Tasks include grant research and reporting; donor correspondence and data processing; and assistance at events and programs.
Time commitment is flexible, but preferably 2 afternoons or one full day per week.
Qualifications: An interest in non-profit fundraising, especially as a grassroots organizing tool, is required. Some prior experience with grant research or other development activity is helpful. Basic computer skills required, especially knowledge of Excel and Word merge functions and database work. Some flexibility in schedule, to help organize and attend events, is helpful.
