The North American Congress on Latin America (NACLA) seeks a candidate with leadership experience in progressive non-profit organizations, a strong interest in U.S.–Latin American relations, and a commitment to outreach and constituency building for progressive social change to take on the duties of Director. We are looking for someone with a proven ability to raise funds; someone with a background in program development and public/media outreach for non-profit organizations; and someone capable of overseeing a small staff in a collegial environment. The Director is accountable to NACLA’s Board of Directors.

NACLA is a progressive independent organization, founded in 1966, dedicated to increasing understanding of Latin America and the Caribbean—and of U.S. involvement in the region—through our bimonthly magazine, NACLA Report on the Americas; our website, nacla.org; the books and anthologies we publish; and our sponsorship of public debates and conferences. NACLA Report on the Americas is the most widely read English language publication on Latin America and is a two-time winner of the Utne Independent Press Award for Best International Coverage. Primary responsibilities:

    40%

  • Undertake all aspects of fundraising and development planning, including major donor relations, direct-mail and online fundraising appeals, event planning; foundation relations, grant-writing, and acquisition of new sources of funding.

  • Improve the outreach and raise the profile of NACLA by working with the press, public speaking, overseeing organization of public events, networking with student and movement organizations, etc.

  • Oversee various aspects of magazine publishing, including circulation and promotion and undertake strategic marketing to raise earned revenue streams.
  • Work closely with editorial staff and editorial committee in the development of NACLA’s print and electronic publishing agenda.
  • Oversee and manage the budget.
  • Supervise the activities of a small staff, including overseeing weekly staff meetings and coordinating volunteers and interns.
  • Work with NACLA Board of Directors on strategic development and marketing planning; coordinate Board development with Board chair.

Required qualifications:

  • Three to five years professional non-profit management or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising with foundations and individual donors.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with Latin America, the Caribbean, and U.S. foreign policy
  • Political awareness, commitment to progressive social change
  • Willingness and ability to serve as NACLA’s “public face,” including commenting publicly on news and current events in the media, etc.
  • Experience formulating and managing budgets.
  • Experience with strategic planning.
  • High-level proficiency/fluency in Spanish.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work with others in a closely collaborative environment.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Knowledge of magazine publishing, including electronic publishing
  • Significant travel, study, and/or work in Latin America
  • Proficiency in Portuguese
  • Connections to Latin America solidarity / labor / global justice movements

Salary:

Base salary: Flexible high $30s–low $40s, depending on experience. Benefits: four weeks paid vacation; health and dental insurance; flexible working environment.
